Colospa Tablet is commonly prescribed to manage symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and abdominal discomfort caused by spasms, cramps, or bloating. It contains Mebeverine, an antispasmodic agent that relaxes the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract. This helps reduce intestinal contractions and eases abdominal pain and digestive discomfort.
It is used to relieve symptoms such as stomach pain, cramping, bloating, and changes in bowel habits that are typically seen in patients with IBS or other functional bowel disorders. By improving muscle tone in the digestive tract, it helps normalize bowel function and reduce excessive gas formation.
Mebeverine works by blocking calcium channels and muscarinic receptors in the smooth muscle of the intestine. This action helps prevent involuntary muscle contractions or spasms, which are the primary cause of pain and discomfort in such conditions. It is typically taken around 20 minutes before meals, as directed by a physician, and should be swallowed whole with water without chewing or crushing the tablet.
Most people tolerate the medication well. However, in some cases, minor side effects like skin rashes may occur. These usually resolve on their own. More serious allergic reactions, such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, are rare but require immediate medical attention.
Before using Colospa Tablet, patients should inform their doctor if they have a history of porphyria, heart problems, liver or kidney issues, or severe constipation. It’s also important to mention any known allergies, especially to lactose or other ingredients in the tablet, as it may contain lactose and other substances that can cause reactions in sensitive individuals. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a healthcare provider before starting the medication.
Store the tablets in a cool, dry place at temperatures between 10°C and 25°C, away from sunlight and out of reach of children. It is not recommended for children under 10 years of age.
To enhance the effectiveness of treatment, patients are advised to eat smaller meals more frequently, avoid spicy and high-fat foods, limit caffeine and carbonated drinks, and maintain a healthy lifestyle through exercise and stress-reducing techniques like yoga or meditation. Including probiotic-rich foods may also support digestive health and reduce bloating.
Colospa Tablet is not habit-forming and belongs to the therapeutic class of antispasmodic medications.
