Introduction
Acupenem 1gm Injection contains the active substance Meropenem, which is an antibiotic from the carbapenem group. It is prescribed for a wide range of bacterial infections. These include pneumonia (both community-acquired and hospital-acquired), infections of the urinary tract, abdominal region, skin and soft tissues, gynecological infections such as pelvic inflammatory disease and endometritis, as well as meningitis and septicemia. It is also used for patients with febrile neutropenia, either on its own or along with antiviral or antifungal treatments. Doctors may also recommend it for patients with low white blood cell counts who develop fever due to suspected bacterial infection or bloodstream infections.
How it works
The medicine is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that acts against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It works by easily penetrating bacterial cells and stopping the formation of the cell wall. This weakens and destroys the bacteria, leading to clearance of infection.
Administration
This injection is given directly into a vein by a healthcare professional. The dosage and duration will depend on the age, body weight, overall health, and the severity of the infection being treated.
Possible side effects
Patients may sometimes experience abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, itching, rashes, and inflammation at the site of injection. Increases in blood platelets or mild changes in blood tests may also occur. Less commonly, fungal infections such as oral thrush, tingling sensations, sore veins, and bowel inflammation may appear. Rarely, seizures, confusion, or severe skin reactions with blistering and peeling may happen. Serious allergic responses including swelling, difficulty in breathing, or severe rashes require immediate medical attention.
Managing side effects
For diarrhea, keeping hydrated with fluids like water or juices is advised. Headache can be eased by rest, adequate hydration, and avoiding alcohol. Nausea or vomiting may be reduced by having simple meals and avoiding oily or spicy foods. Abdominal pain can often be relieved by resting, eating smaller meals, and using a warm compress on the stomach.
Warnings and precautions
The medicine should be used carefully in patients with kidney or liver problems, and those who have a history of gastrointestinal disease or hypersensitivity reactions. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should use it only when clearly needed and under medical supervision. Elderly patients and children over 3 months can be given the medicine with caution. It is not recommended for infants below 3 months of age.
Drug interactions
Inform your doctor if you are taking medicines for gout like probenecid, epilepsy medicines such as valproic acid and sodium valproate, or blood-thinning agents like warfarin. These can interact with Meropenem and require dose adjustments or monitoring.
Overdose information
Since the injection is always administered by medical professionals in a hospital setting, an overdose is unlikely. However, if unusual symptoms occur after administration, medical advice should be sought immediately.
