Trimetazidine is prescribed for the management of angina pectoris, a condition in which patients experience chest discomfort due to restricted blood supply to the heart. The medicine supports the heart muscle by enhancing its energy metabolism and allowing it to work more efficiently under limited oxygen conditions. It shifts the way the heart generates energy, encouraging glucose oxidation instead of relying mainly on fatty acid breakdown, which reduces the oxygen requirement of cardiac cells. By lowering oxygen demand and improving cell function, it helps reduce both the frequency and intensity of angina symptoms.

This medicine is commonly recommended for individuals with stable angina to reduce chest pain during exertion or stress and to prevent further episodes. In addition to its main use in angina, research and clinical practice have shown that it can be helpful in improving exercise capacity in those with chronic heart failure and has also been used in certain cases for complaints like tinnitus and vertigo that are associated with inner ear disorders. Trimetazidine should only be taken under strict medical supervision, and it is not suitable for people with severe kidney problems, severe liver disorders, Parkinson’s disease, or other movement-related conditions.

The tablets or capsules should be swallowed whole with water and taken exactly as instructed by the prescribing physician without crushing or chewing. Following dosage guidelines carefully is essential to obtain maximum benefit. Side effects that may appear include dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, weakness, or tiredness. Most of these are temporary, but medical advice should be sought if they persist or worsen. Rarely, more serious reactions like allergic responses, abnormal heart rhythms, or liver problems can occur.

Care must be taken if the patient is already using other medicines. Trimetazidine may interact with beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, nitrates, and drugs processed by the CYP2D6 enzyme such as certain antidepressants or antipsychotics. These interactions could either enhance its effect or increase the chances of side effects, so the prescribing doctor must be informed of all medicines, supplements, or treatments being used. Though no specific food interaction is identified, taking the medicine with water or after meals is generally advised to minimize stomach irritation.

The drug is contraindicated in children, in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and in those with hypersensitivity to its components. Caution is recommended in patients with moderate kidney impairment or liver issues, and it should not be combined with medicines known to prolong the QT interval. For safe use, Trimetazidine must be stored at room temperature away from excess heat and moisture, and treatment should never be stopped suddenly without consulting a doctor.
