Clavam BID Dry Syrup – Overview for Parents
Clavam BID Dry Syrup is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections in children, including those affecting the ear, nose, throat, lungs, chest, skin, urinary tract, and teeth. It is particularly useful in treating infections that have become resistant to standard antibiotics, including certain forms of tuberculosis.
Administration Instructions
This syrup can be given with or without food, but administering it alongside meals can improve absorption and reduce the likelihood of stomach discomfort. Your child’s doctor may recommend giving it two to three times a day, depending on the type and severity of the infection. The exact dose is based on your child’s age, weight, and medical condition.
If your child vomits within 30 minutes of taking the syrup, you can repeat the dose once they’ve calmed down. However, avoid giving a double dose if the next scheduled dose is approaching.
How Clavam BID Works
Clavam BID Dry Syrup contains two active components: Amoxycillin and Clavulanic Acid.
-
Amoxycillin works by targeting and weakening the bacterial cell wall, which eventually destroys the bacteria.
-
Clavulanic Acid inhibits an enzyme (beta-lactamase) that some resistant bacteria produce to block antibiotics. By combining these two, the medicine becomes effective against bacteria that would otherwise be difficult to treat.
Medical Uses
Clavam BID Dry Syrup is prescribed for the treatment of:
-
Common bacterial infections (ears, throat, lungs, urinary tract, skin, and dental infections)
-
Drug-resistant tuberculosis – particularly where bacteria produce beta-lactamase, making other antibiotics less effective
Benefits in Treating Drug-Resistant TB
In tuberculosis cases where the bacteria have developed resistance to multiple antibiotics, the combination of amoxycillin and clavulanic acid can still be effective. Clavulanic acid neutralizes bacterial defense mechanisms, allowing amoxycillin to destroy the TB-causing organisms, making this medicine a suitable option for resistant strains.
Possible Side Effects in Children
Clavam BID is generally well-tolerated by children, but some may experience minor side effects, which typically resolve as the body adjusts to the treatment. Common side effects include:
-
Stomach pain
-
Nausea or vomiting
-
Diarrhea
-
Allergic reactions
-
Fungal infections in the mouth or skin (mucocutaneous candidiasis)
If these effects persist or seem to worsen, consult your child’s doctor.
Precautions Before Use
Before starting this medicine, inform your child’s doctor if your child has a history of:
-
Allergies to antibiotics
-
Heart problems
-
Liver or kidney issues
-
Blood disorders
-
Gastrointestinal concerns

Congenital conditions or other ongoing health issues
This information helps the doctor determine the right dosage and treatment plan.
Usage Instructions
Shake the bottle well before each use. Prepare the syrup by adding sterile water up to the marked level on the bottle, then shake until the powder dissolves completely. Always give the syrup as directed and for the full prescribed duration, even if your child appears to recover earlier.
In Case of a Missed Dose
If a dose is missed, give it as soon as you remember unless it’s almost time for the next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed one and continue with the regular dosing routine. Avoid giving two doses at once.
Safety Warnings
-
Kidney Conditions: Use with caution. Dose adjustments may be necessary.
-
Liver Conditions: Monitor closely if your child has liver issues. Consult the doctor before use in severe liver disease.
