What is CREON 25000?
CREON 25000 is a prescription medication that contains pancrelipase, a mixture of digestive enzymes including lipase, amylase, and protease. These enzymes are normally produced by the pancreas to help break down fats, carbohydrates, and proteins in the food we eat.
CREON is used as pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) in people whose pancreas does not make enough enzymes due to medical conditions such as:
-
Cystic fibrosis
-
Chronic pancreatitis
-
Pancreatectomy (surgical removal of the pancreas)
-
Pancreatic cancer
-
Shwachman-Diamond syndrome
Contents of CREON 25000:
Each capsule of CREON 25000 contains:
-
Lipase: 25,000 Ph. Eur. units
-
Amylase: 18,000 Ph. Eur. units
-
Protease: 1,000 Ph. Eur. units
These enzymes are derived from porcine (pig) pancreatic extract.
How Does It Work
In people with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), the pancreas does not release enough enzymes into the small intestine, leading to poor digestion and absorption of nutrients. CREON 25000 delivers these enzymes directly to the intestines to aid in the digestion of:
-
Fats (with lipase)
-
Carbohydrates (with amylase)
-
Proteins (with protease)
This helps reduce symptoms such as:
-
Steatorrhea (fatty stools)
-
Abdominal pain
-
Bloating
-
Malnutrition
-
Weight loss
How to Use CREON 25000:
-
CREON should always be taken with meals and snacks, not on an empty stomach.
-
The capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of water.
-
Do not crush or chew the capsules or the contents, as this can destroy the enzyme activity and irritate the mouth.
-
If swallowing capsules is difficult, they may be opened and the granules sprinkled onto soft, acidic food (like applesauce). The mixture should be swallowed immediately without chewing.
Dosage:
The dose of CREON is individualized based on:
-
Patient’s weight
-
Severity of enzyme insufficiency
-
Fat content of meals
-
Symptoms
Usual starting dose:
For adults, it is often 25,000 to 50,000 units of lipase per meal.
Doses may be adjusted by a healthcare provider, and total daily dose should not exceed 10,000 lipase units per kilogram of body weight per day to avoid the risk of fibrosing colonopathy.
Possible Side Effects:
Most patients tolerate CREON well, but possible side effects include:
Common:
-
Stomach pain
-
Gas
-
Bloating
-
Diarrhea or constipation
-
Nausea
Serious (but rare):
-
Fibrosing colonopathy (especially with high doses in children with cystic fibrosis)
-
Allergic reactions (rash, itching, breathing difficulty)
-
High levels of uric acid in blood or urine
Contact a doctor if you experience severe or persistent side effects.
Precautions:
-
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Use only if clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor.
-
Pork allergy: CREON contains enzymes from pork sources—avoid if allergic.
-
Avoid taking CREON without food.
-
Ensure proper hydration to reduce the risk of constipation.
Storage:
-
Store at room temperature (below 25°C or 77°F).
-
Keep in a tightly closed, moisture-resistant container.
-
Keep out of reach of children.
