How it works
Olanzapine helps restore clear thinking and reduces symptoms such as delusions, suspiciousness, sudden mood changes, and difficulties in emotional expression. By calming overactive brain activity, it supports better daily functioning and social interactions.

How to take it
The medicine is available in tablet form and is taken orally, with or without meals. For adults, the usual starting dose ranges between 5 mg and 10 mg once daily, which may later be adjusted to 10–20 mg per day depending on individual response. For adolescents, treatment often begins with 2.5 mg or 5 mg per day. Always follow the dosage prescribed by your doctor.

Possible side effects
Some people may feel drowsy, dizzy, or have blurred vision, especially at the start of treatment. These effects can make tasks like driving or operating machines unsafe. Other common issues include constipation, dry mouth, weight gain, difficulty sleeping, high cholesterol, changes in mood or behavior, and increased blood sugar. Rising slowly from a sitting or lying position can help prevent dizziness. Staying hydrated, eating more fiber, and regular exercise may ease constipation.

Missed dose
If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If your next scheduled dose is near, skip the missed one and continue as normal. Do not double the dose to make up for a forgotten tablet. Always follow your doctor’s guidance before making changes.

Precautions
Inform your doctor if you are allergic to olanzapine or any other medicines. Mention any history of rash, swelling, breathing problems, or other allergic reactions. Let your doctor know if you are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning pregnancy.

When to seek urgent medical help
Contact your doctor or emergency services immediately if you notice signs of a severe reaction such as chest tightness, difficulty breathing, seizures, severe dizziness, sudden mood changes, suicidal thoughts, stiffness, trouble swallowing, or an unexplained rash. Women who become pregnant while on treatment should consult their doctor without delay.
