The S-750 Tablet is an antibiotic medication containing Sultamicillin 750 mg, a combination of Ampicillin and Sulbactam. This combination enhances the efficacy of Ampicillin by inhibiting beta-lactamase enzymes produced by bacteria, thereby broadening its spectrum of activity against various bacterial infections.
Composition
-
Sultamicillin (as 750 mg tablet): Upon administration, Sultamicillin is hydrolyzed to release Ampicillin and Sulbactam in the body.
Uses
S-750 Tablet is prescribed for the treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections, including:
-
Respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia, bronchitis)
-
Urinary tract infections (e.g., cystitis, pyelonephritis)
-
Skin and soft tissue infections (e.g., cellulitis, abscesses)
-
Ear infections (e.g., otitis media)
-
Gonorrhea
-
Post-operative infections
-
Gynecological infections
-
Intra-abdominal infections
It is effective against beta-lactamase-producing organisms, which are resistant to many other antibiotics.
Dosage and Administration
-
The typical dosage for adults and children weighing over 30 kg is 750 mg twice daily.
-
The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water.
-
It can be taken with or without food.
-
The duration of therapy depends on the type and severity of the infection but typically ranges from 5 to 14 days.
-
For uncomplicated gonorrhea, a single dose of 2.25 g (three 750 mg tablets) may be administered, often in combination with probenecid 1.0 g to prolong the plasma concentration of Sulbactam and Ampicillin.
Mechanism of Action
-
Ampicillin: Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death.
-
Sulbactam: Inhibits beta-lactamase enzymes produced by bacteria, preventing the degradation of Ampicillin and extending its antibacterial activity.
Together, they provide a synergistic effect, enhancing the antibiotic’s efficacy against resistant bacteria.
Common Side Effects
-
Gastrointestinal disturbances: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain.
-
Skin reactions: rash, itching.
-
Hematological effects: rare cases of thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), leukopenia (low white blood cell count).
-
Liver enzyme alterations: transient increases in liver enzymes.
-
Superinfections: overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi.
Most side effects are mild and resolve upon discontinuation of the medication.
Precautions and Warnings
-
Allergy: Contraindicated in patients with a known allergy to penicillin or beta-lactam antibiotics.
-
Liver and Kidney Function: Use with caution in patients with hepatic or renal impairment; dosage adjustments may be necessary.
-
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding when prescribed by a healthcare provider.
-
Drug Interactions: May interact with other medications; inform your healthcare provider of all drugs you are taking.
Storage
